Richard DeNapoli Speaks to Students at Pinecrest School

I had the pleasure of speaking to the students at the Pinecrest School about politics and why young people should vote Republican.  The Pinecrest School posted pictures on their website.  You can read their article below.

Pine Crest Students Discuss Election 2012 with Political Party Leaders

4/17/2012
A Look at Election 2012 – Lunchtime Roundtable Conversations put our students at the table with the Chairs of the Democratic and Repulican Parties of Broward County. Mr. Mitch Ceasar, Democratic Chair, and Mr. Richard DeNapoli, Republican Chair, shared their personal road to political activism and discussed the issues that frame this year’s Presidential Election.

Students learned how important Broward County votes are for Florida and nationally and thus why “getting out the vote” truly matters. Punctuated with a steady flow of questions and answers, these lunch and learn sessions will continue in the fall when our guests return for more lively sessions.

On a hot and sunny south Florida afternoon where the weather held out until shortly after the event ended, Chairman Richard DeNapoli lived up to a campaign promise and his Eight Point Platform for the Broward Republican Party in staging yet another successful fundraiser.

Over 500 Republicans attended the inaugural Grand Old Party BBQ at the famed Bergeron ranch in far western Broward County. Famed vocalist Lou Galterio met them with the National Anthem.

The “Country Afternoon” featured a keynote speaker in Congressman Allen West (FL-22), as well as Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, Florida House Representatives Matt Hudson and George Moraitis, Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti, and Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca.

Returning to the Grand Old Party BBQ from his appearance as Emcee at the Republican Party of Broward County – 2011 Lincoln Day Dinner was Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell. Standing tall above the crowd, Elwell held his Weiner jokes until the very end.

Making an appearance at the GOP barbecue was special guest Sharon Day, Co-Chair of the Republican National Committee. She cheerfully thanked everyone for their support of the Grand Old Party.

In the race for the Republican nomination to unseat Bill Nelson (D-FL) in the United States Senate were Florida’s 34th United States Senator George Lemieux, State Senate President Mike Haridopolos, former House Majority Leader Adam Hasner and retired Army Colonel Mike McCallister. Each spoke of the need to send Senator Nelson into retirement.

Former Davie Councilman and current mayoral candidate Mike Crowley was also in attendance.

Congressman West urged everyone in attendance to work hard so President Barack Obama could be sent “back to Chicago.” The freshman Congressman gathered over 400 petition signatures to place his name on the ballot in 2012.

State CFO Jeff Atwater advised the crowd that Tallahassee does not need any more of their money thanks to the budget prowess of the Florida Legislature and Governor Rick Scott.

As the lone Republican on a panel of nine, County Commissioner Chip LaMarca urged the crowd to send him some Republican help on the commission. LaMarca introduced Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti who is running for re-election in 2012.

A number of elected officials and candidates spoke with RED BROWARD, a conservative voice for the community. Congressman West spoke on several issues including Weinergate and colleague Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is now calling for Weiner to … resign his New York congressional seat.

Prior to the barbeque, a VIP event was held in Alligator Ron’s Saloon that included elected officials and candidates for public office. “It was great to see so many influential politicians captivate a crowd,” said Richard DeNapoli, Chairman of the Broward Republican Party.

“It was my honor to chair the Grand Old Party BBQ,” says Sally Musser. “We had an amazing venue in the Bergeron Ranch, great speakers and a program that honored our elected officials for their public service.”

The barbecue followed a successful Lincoln Day Dinner that raised over $90,000 for the Broward Republican Party. “The inaugural Grand Old Party barbeque was an overwhelming success,” says former Plantation Councilman and BREC Executive Director Rico Petrocelli. “We saw many new faces today and I look forward to welcoming them into our party.”

Republicans Elect Richard DeNapoli as Broward Party Chairman

Here’s an article detailing the night I was elected as the new Broward Republican Party Chairman

Republicans elect Richard DeNapoli as new Broward party chairman

By Anthony Man

December 6, 2010 09:52 PM

Updated at 10:03 p.m.

A divided Broward Republican Party voted Monday night to elect Richard DeNapoli to a two-year term as party chairman.

DeNapoli, 33, is president of the Republican Club of Greater Hollywood and served since May as treasurer of the county party.

He’s a lawyer who works as a trust officer at private bank.

The usually orderly and businesslike Republicans were as contentious as their Democratic counterparts when they gathered Monday to elect their new chairman.

The election required two ballots. DeNapoli won 129 votes. Former Davie Mayor Tom Truex won 125 votes.

The first round of voting, which ended without a winner, ended at about 9 p.m. – two hours after the party election meeting started.

Before the second round of voting, the gathering of some 300 Republicans – most of whom were committeemen and committeewomen eligible to vote for party officers – the gathering was reduced to squabbling over the number of ballots cast and the number of eligible voters.

One woman shouted from the audience, sarcastically wondering if the liberal activist group ACORN – which is despised by Republicans – was involved in the party’s internal voting.

Before that, the four candidates for chairman called for goodwill toward fellow Republicans and unity.

Above, DeNapoli at a candidates forum a week before the chairman’s election.

On the first ballot, DeNapoli received 139 votes and Truex received 78 votes.

Before the squabbling that preceeded the second round of voting Jay Narang, who got 45 votes, and Gary Robinson, who got 14 votes, both endorsed Truex.

Narang, of Pembroke Pines, is president of the Southwest Broward Republican Organization. Robinson, of Coral Springs, is president of the Tamarac/Margate/Coconut Creek Republican Club

DeNapoli’s pitch for votes included a plea for Republicans “to focus on what unites us, not what divides us…. I’d rather take the fight to the Democrats, not each other.”

DeNapoli touted his experience raising money for the party, his work for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s administration, and founding of the Hollywood club. He offered an eight point plan for beefing up the party organization.

Truex described himself as a small business owner, NRA member and Sunday school teacher.

He said he wanted to “completely rebuild the Broward Republican Party.”

The plans offered by DeNapoli and the other candidates are fine, he said, but the party’s most important priority should be electing Republicans to local offices in Broward County.

Truex said that wouldn’t benefit him. If elected, he pledged not to run for a political office himself.

The four candidates were competing for a job that involves long hours, requires extensive fundraising efforts, and comes with a lot of criticism. And it’s unpaid.

The party chairman is the leading public face of Republicans in Broward and has a voice in governing the state Republican Party. The chairmanship has also been a stepping stone in the last decade or so for leaders who have gone on to other political offices.

Democrats don’t have a contest this year. Broward Democratic Chairman Mitch Ceasar was elected in December 2008 to a four-year term. Republican chairmen hold two-year terms.

The four-candidate Republican field is unusual. For most of the last decade, the chairman contests have been sedate affairs, with just one candidate.
